College students face many life challenges and transitions which can often lead to “the blues” or bouts of depression. Stresses of classes, moving away from home, forming new relationships, and worrying about the future can lead you to feel like you just can’t cope any longer. Sometimes, these feelings of being overwhelmed disappear after a few days. However, if you find you’re unable to shake “the blues,” it may be time to seek professional help.
Symptoms of depression:
- sad or anxious mood
- eating too much or too little
- sleeping poorly or too much
- difficulty concentrating
- lack of energy or interest
- feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and/or guilt
- irritability
- suicidal thoughts or attempts
There is sometimes a physiological component to depression, which makes it impossible for people to “snap out of it.” Successful treatment may include a combination of medication and counseling.
