UA’s Suicide Awareness Week
Sponsored by Counseling Center

QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention
QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer, three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught gatekeeper training program in the United States, and more than one million adults have been trained in classroom settings in more than 48 states. Typically QPR is available to faculty, staff and students, by request of the Counseling Center. However during UA’s Suicide Awareness Week, the Counseling Center will be offering eight QPR trainings at the Ferguson Center, with reservations through Tix. Additional requests for gatekeeper training may be made by going to the Counseling Center website, https://counseling.sa.ua.edu/programs/outreach-resources/outreach-program-request-form/, then complete the program request form and indicate that the topic you are requesting is QPR gatekeeper training. We believe that a caring and responsive community is essential in addressing this important issue, and that we all have a role in suicide prevention. If you have questions or need more information, you may contact Holly Prewitt, at the Counseling Center.

Mid-Day Mental Health Break: Mindfulness Meditation (Lunch Provided) Come join the Counseling Center staff for mindfulness meditation and lunch! Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness helps us put some space between ourselves and our reactions, breaking down our conditioned responses.

Lunch and Learn: Assisting Distressed Students (Lunch Provided) Any member of the University of Alabama community may come into contact with a distressed student. Being aware of distress signals, methods of intervention, and sources of help for the student can help you feel more in control of situations that may arise. Join the Counseling Center to learn more about how to best support someone who may be in distress.

Labyrinth
Labyrinths are often connected with wellness and have been used around the world for more than 3,500 years. Walking the labyrinth provides an opportunity to reflect, think critically about a question or problem, connect with your physical self, reduce stress, experience gratitude, or inspire creativity.
